MAKSUD SINGKATAN "A'KUM"

MAKSUD SINGKATAN "A'KUM"

Assalamu'alaikum

I have done a bit on study on this through the internet. What I found was pretty shocking. 'Akum' doesn't mean 'binatang' (animal). It's an acronym of 'Ovdey Kochavim U'Mazalot', which literally means 'worshippers of star and zodiac signs'. Above is a forwarded mail which says 'Akum' is 'Avde Kokhavim U Mazzalot', which is slightly different with the right one. And to say that it means 'Hamba-hamba Binatang dan Orang-orang Sesat' is totally unacceptable. It is totally different, and what can I say is, this is a pure fitnah.

Let me tell you something about this 'Akum' in Jew.

There is a law in Judaism, which says that the Jews are forbidden to eat food if it is made by non-Jews. This law is called 'Bishal Akum'. Bishal means cookings, or food. And Akum is an acronym of 'Ovdey Kochavim U'Mazalot' (explained above). This law is almost similar to our Islam law, where we cannot eat non-Halal food (please have a review on non-Halal food to understand this better). So yes, Akum, in simpler word means 'musyrik' (Jews kaffer). Today, they define Akum as a word to describe non-Jews, not to say that non-Jews are animals.

The history of Jews also tell that every single person on earth who is not a Jew, is certainly at the same level of animals. Exactly, this is something very humiliating for us, being called as animals by the Jews. But this has nothing related to the word Akum. So it is not true to say that Akum means animal. No relation at all.

Of course, it is very bad of them to call us animals, but we should not respond to that with another jeer. We are also not allowed to fitnah (saying something untrue) others, even to the other religions and enemies. It is not our right, as we are only servants and slaves of Allah, same goes with them although they don't believe in the same God as ours.

I'm very much agree to use 'Assalamualaikum' instead of 'Akum', but somehow, I go against this fitnah. Exactly, the Jews are our sole enemy, but we don't have the right to say something that is not true about them. We don't have the right to create a fitnah, even against our enemy. Jews are jews. Fitnah is also a fitnah, regardless to whom it may concern. Right?

If this forwarded mail could be emphasized like this, then why don't we send mails asking our people not to say bad words, swearing and cursing to our very own Muslim brothers/sisters? It is normal to hear 'babi'(pig), 'lembu'(cow) and several animal names being called out when making fun of other people, even among the Muslims. To make it worse, those words are exactly, undoubtedly the name of animals. No hidden meanings like 'Akum'. So why do we need to take account of what others say about us, if we are doing the same thing(even worse) to our own people?

I have no intention at all to defend the Jews. But my biggest concern is for us, the Muslim, to not to say bad and untrue things to others. We should do a brief (better, thorough...) study first before we forward any message to the others. Don't just receive and forward, accept evrything is right, and make others believe of what you believe, because sometimes, what you believe may not be true at all.

Do correct me if I am wrong.
